# Awards

A large number of prize winners study, teach or conduct research at the Faculty of Economics and Business. The awards for their achievements range from prestigious science prizes and individual awards to prizes for theses and dissertations (Image: Dr. Valerie Laturnus, 2025 Dissertation Award of the IHK Frankfurt am Main). Particularly pleasing in this context is the large proportion of early career researchers. This underlines the high quality of education that students can expect at our faculty. In addition to the regularly successful (re-)accreditations by the [AACSB](https://www.wiwi.uni-frankfurt.de/en/faculty/quality-assurance/accreditations/aacsb) (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), [ACQUIN](https://www.wiwi.uni-frankfurt.de/en/faculty/quality-assurance/accreditations/acquin) (the Accreditation, Certification and Quality Assurance Institute) and [PRME](https://www.wiwi.uni-frankfurt.de/en/faculty/quality-assurance/accreditations/prme) (Principles for Responsible Management Education), the large number of prize winners is further testimony to our faculty’s academic excellence.

## 2025

- **Dr. Nicolaus Grochola** was awarded the “Ernst Meyer Preis 2025” for his dissertation on „*Essays on Market Risks of Life Insurers”*. - **Prof. Dr. Cornelia Storz** was awarded the „*Imperial Order of the Rising Sun with Collar – Golden Rays”* by the Japanese Government for her exceptional contributions to fostering bilateral relations and international understanding between Germany and Japan. ## 2023

- **Konstantin Bräuer** received this year's *IHK Dissertation Award* for his dissertation on the topic of "Essays on household finance". - **Dr. Felix Holub** was awarded the *Sturm & Drang Prize* 2023 for the best publication by young researchers of the Faculty of Economics and Business. - The German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina honors economist **Prof. Nicola Fuchs-Schündeln, Ph.D.**, with this year's Carus Medal for her outstanding research in quantitative macroeconomics.
- On Thursday, October 12, 2023, outstanding professors at Goethe University were honored for the fourth time by the Goethe Research Academy for Early Career Researchers (GRADE) with the award for the best doctoral supervision. **Prof. Dr. Bernd Skiera** was awarded in the category "All-round outstanding supervisor" and especially his high scientific standards were highlighted. - **Prof. Volker Wieland, Ph.D.**, together with his co-authors, has received the *Ordnungspolitischen Preis 2023 des Wirtschaftsverbands der Familienunternehmer* for their guest article "Angebotsorientierte Finanzpolitik als Gebot der Stunde".
- **Lukas Jürgensmeier** received this year's *ISMS Doctoral Dissertation Award* for his dissertation on the topic of "fair competition especially on digital platforms".
- This year's Max-Weber-Prize for Business Ethics was awarded to **Dr. Tim-Philipp Bruns**, who, in the context of his dissertation on distributive justice, explores the question of how observed distributional preferences relate to the concept of economic rationality.
- On February 27, 2023, a project by **Prof. Dr. Bernd Skiera** and **Prof. Dr. Jochen Reiner** has been awarded the *Science Award ("Wissenschaftspreis")* 2023 by the EHI Foundation and GS1 Germany. - **Prof. Volker Wieland, Ph.D.**, Managing Director of the Institute for Monetary and Financial Stability (IMFS) at Goethe University, has been appointed to the "Hessian Council for the Future of the Economy". The Future Council is to develop recommendations for government action in the next legislative period. - **Prof. Dr. Peter Gomber**, Chair of e-Finance, was elected on January, 23 for three more years as a member of the Exchange Council at the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (FSE). The Exchange Council is a key forum for discussing fundamental issues and developments at the FSE. ## 2022

- For his doctoral thesis, *Price of Privacy*, **Dr. Lennart Kraft** received the *Dr.-Dietmar-Harting Prize* of the Erich-Gutenberg-Arbeitsgemeinschaft e.V. for outstanding achievements in business administration on the theory of enterprise at the award ceremony on November 26, 2022. - **Dr. Jens Lausen** receives the prize for the best dissertation *("Market Organization and Investor Protection in Digital Financial Markets")*, endowed with 1000 euros, from the Dr. Mihael Foit and Elfriede Stich-Foit Foundation for Young Academics. The award was presented at the Dies academicus on November 18, 2022.
- **Jan Zacharias** receives the 500 euro prize for the best master's thesis *("Interactive and Explainable Machine Learning")* from the Dr. Mihael Foit and Elfriede Stich-Foit Foundation for Young Scientists. The award was presented at the Dies academicus on November 18, 2022.
- **Dr. Andreas Barth** and **Dr. Sasan Mansouri** were awarded the *Sturm & Drang Prize* 2022 for the best publication by young researchers of the Faculty of Economics and Business. - This year, the *Schmalenbach Prize*, endowed with 10,000 euros, was awarded to **Dr. Cristina Mihale-Wilson**. She is a research assistant (post-doc) at the Chair of Information Systems and Information Management at the Faculty of Economics and Business.
- **Prof. Nicola Fuchs-Schündeln, Ph.D.**, Chair of Macroeconomics and Development at Goethe University, has been admitted as a member of the Leopoldina National Academy of Sciences.
- The business educator **Dr. Christin Siegfried** is awarded the newly established prize *New Horizon – Preis des Präsidenten* from Goethe University. The prize is endowed with 5,000 euros and will be awarded annually for five years.

## 2021

- The authors **Jens Lausen**, **Benjamin Clapham**, **Michael Siering** and **Prof. Dr. Peter Gomber** received the *AIS Best Information Systems Publications Award* for their study "Who Is the Next "Wolf of Wall Street"? Detection of Financial Intermediary Misconduct" (*Journal of the Association for Information Systems*). This award, issued annually by the Association for Information Systems (AIS), is the highest international publication award in information systems.
- **Dr. Christoph Hambel** was awarded the *Sturm & Drang Prize* 2021 for the best publication by a young researcher of the Faculty of Economics and Business. - For his paper "Bayesian Estimation of DSGE Models with Hamiltonian Monte Carlo," Ph.D. student **Balint Tatar** received the *Honorable Mention Award* at this year's International Association for Applied Econometrics conference. The association honors young scientists for special research results they present at the annual conference.
- **Dr. Simon Heß**, postdoctoral researcher at the Chair of Development Economics, was awarded the *Young Researcher Award for Excellence in Policy Relevant Research on Developing Countries* by the Research Group on Development Economics of the Verein für Socialpolitik. The prize recognizes dissertations that combine original research with practical relevance. The prize is awarded with the support of the KfW Development Bank. Up to three prizes are awarded annually. - The *Science Award* 2021 for the best dissertation was awarded to **Dr. Christoph Brenner** from Goethe University. In his dissertation, which was supervised by Prof. Oliver Hinz, Professor of Business Informatics and Information Management at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Dr. Brenner examined the topic of “Performance Marketing”.

## 2020

- **Simon Heß, Ph.D.** was awarded the *Sturm & Drang Prize* 2020 for the best publication by a young researcher of the Faculty of Economics and Business. - The economist **Prof. Dr. Bertram Schefold** was appointed as Honorary Professor at Peking University (PKU).
- **Dr. Benjamin Clapham** was awarded the Research Prize 2020 of the Frankfurt Institute for Risk Management and Regulation for his dissertation *Integrity and Efficiency of Electronic Securities Markets: Fraud Detection, Safeguards, and the Role of High-Frequency Trading*. The dissertation was supervised by Prof. Gomber (Chair of e-Finance).
- **Prof. Nicola Fuchs-Schündeln, Ph.D.**, Professor of Macroeconomics and Development, was appointed to the new international expert commission on major economic challenges set up by French President Emmanuel Macron. Under the leadership of Nobel Laureate Jean Tirole and former Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund Olivier Blanchard, two dozen economists from around the world are working on forward-looking strategies to address issues of inequality, climate change and demographics. - The Editorial Board of the Review of Economic Studies elected **Prof. Nicola Fuchs-Schündeln, Ph.D.**, Professor of Macroeconomics and Development, as Chair. Her mandate runs until 2023. The *Review of Economic Studies* was founded in 1933 and is the only of the so-called “Top 5” economics journals to be published in Europe.
- **Prof. Dr. Peter Gomber** was elected for three more years as a member of the Exchange Council at the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (FSE). The Exchange Council is a key forum for discussing fundamental issues and developments at the FSE. Among other things, the Exchange Council is responsible for the appointment, withdrawal and supervision of the executive management. Furthermore, it issues the Exchange Rules, the Fee Regulations and the Conditions for Transactions on the Exchange. Prof. Dr. Gomber is a member of the Council since 2011.

## 2019

- **Prof. Simone Wies, Ph.D.** was awarded the [*Sturm & Drang Prize*](https://www.wiwi.uni-frankfurt.de/en/research/careers-in-research/sturm-drang-prize) 2019 for the best publication by a young researcher of the Faculty of Economics and Business.
- **Prof. Nicola Fuchs-Schündeln, Ph.D.** was appointed to the new Franco-German Council of Economic Experts. The economist from Frankfurt will be involved in the counseling of Franco-German policy in the future.
- This year **Prof. Dr. Rainer Haselmann** receives the prize of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities ([BBAW](https://www.bbaw.de/)). The prize, donated by the Commerzbank Foundation, honors outstanding academic achievements in the field of law and economics.
- **Dr. Jan-Hendrik Weinert** was awarded the *GAUSS Young Researcher Award* 2018 by the German Society for Insurance and Financial Mathematics (DGVFM) and the German Actuarial Association (DAV) for his outstanding dissertation *Essays on Tontine Annuities*, which he wrote at the Chair of Insurance and Regulation and the International Center for Insurance Regulation (ICIR). - For the 18th time, DZ BANK Group in Frankfurt awarded one of the most highly endowed university prizes in the German economy. On 29 March, the top graduates who had submitted outstanding theses for the 2019 Career Prize were honored at DZ BANK Group’s 2019 Career Prize ceremony. **Arina Brutyan** won first place in the Master's category for her thesis *The Impact of Solvency II on the Capital Structure of European Insurers*, which she wrote at the Chair of Insurance and Regulation and the International Center for Insurance Regulation (ICIR).
