Learning German

Even if you intend to follow courses in English at the Faculty, we would like to encourage you to learn German.

A pre-sessional one-month language and intensive German-language course (DIA) takes place every year in March and September before the lecture period starts. Information on the course is provided by the Global Office of Goethe University, please see here. There you will also find recommendations for learning German outside the university.

During the semester the International Study Centre of Goethe University (ISZ) offers a broad range of  German language courses addressing students with different levels of knowledge. All courses offered by Goethe University are free of charge.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) also provides valuable information on this topic, please see here.

Insurances

Health insurance \ All exchange are required to have valid health insurance for the entire duration of their stay in Germany. German health insurance providers offer special student rates at around €80 per month.

Students from EU countries can continue using their home country’s public or private health insurance and should bring their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which is also valid in Germany in case of illness.

Students from non-EU countries who do not have health insurance that is valid in Germany can find contact information for insurance providers based in Frankfurt here. Additional details and helpful links can be found in the Global Office’s information brochure.

Others\ To protect yourself against claims arising from personal liability, personal liability insurance is strongly recommended. Accident insurance during academic activities is provided free of charge by the German federal government. The DAAD-Group Insurance Scheme offers a comprehensive package that includes coverage for illness, personal accidents, and personal liability.

Accommodation

Student residences\ Exchange students of our partner universities may apply for a room in a student residence. Most student residences are administered by the "Studentenwerk", a partner institution of the University. Please apply as early as possible.

Transport

Frankfurt has a very well developed inner city network of public transport including bus lines, underground lines and tram lines organized by the “Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund”. If you take the subway (U-Bahn, line 1,2,3 or 8) to reach the campus, please get off at "Holzhausenstraße".

For information on transport in Frankfurt and the greater Rhine-Main area, please see here.

Frankfurt Airport is located outside the city. Should you arrive by plane, you can reach Frankfurt/Main station in about 20 minutes by commuter train (S-Bahn). From the main station the journey to the University takes less than 10 minutes by underground.

Should you come from Frankfurt-Hahn Airport, you can travel to Frankfurt with the private bus company Flibco. This takes about 1.5 hours.

All students applying for a semester abroad at Frankfurt University have to buy a semester ticket, allowing them to use public transport in Germany. The semester ticket can be obtained as QR code.

To reach your destinations within Frankfurt you can also use the excellent infrastructure of bike paths that cross the town. With your Goethe Card you can use the service “Call a Bike” to rent a bicycle. This is for free for the first 60 minutes.
