# FAQ
On this site, you can find frequently asked questions regarding the application and selection for the Master of Science in Management Science. The questions are categorized as follows:

## Questions regarding the application process
## Internships, work experience, volunteering
**Question:**\
Do you consider internships, apprenticeships, studies abroad or social engagement (volunteering) in the admission process?
**Answer:**\
We do recognize work experience or internships abroad (in another country than your country of birth and/or the country you have completed your high school). The internships or job must be related to economics or business administration. All other forms (internships in the home country, volunteering) are not considered.
## Information about application status
**Question:**\
I sent my documents to uni assist but why is the status of my application not updated yet?
**Answer:**\
Uni assist does not give you any feedback whether your documents are complete. After uni assist received your application documents (in case of applicants with a foreign bachelor's degree your documents in hard copy), it takes at least three weeks until your application is processed. When uni assist has completed the evaluation of your documents, your application is forwarded to Goethe University.
**Please note that due to the high number of applications, we cannot answer questions regarding the application status.**
## Duration of selection process
**Question:**\
When can I expect to receive an admission letter?
**Answer:**\
Admission letters will be sent out in the second half of July. Rejection letters will be sent in October when the whole admission procedure is completed (including a potential clearing or lottery).
## Clearing procedure
**Question:**\
Is there a clearing procedure in which vacant places are filled?
**Answer:**\
A clearing procedure will only be carried out if there are still vacant places after the main process in August. In this case a lower admission threshold score will be determined and further applicants will be admitted. This process would take place around mid- to late August.
## Admission lottery
**Question:**\
When does the admission lottery start? How can I take place?
**Answer:**\
The lottery will be carried out if there a still vacant places after the clearing process. The registrar's office is responsible for the drawing of lots. Therefore applicants have to register online to a new deadline. After the deadline has passed the lot will decide about the admission. If all formal requirements for the Master`s program are fulfilled the place will be given to the one who drew the lot. Further information may be found here (in German).
## Certification of application documents
**Question:**\
Do the submitted documents for the application to the Master’s program (Abitur-/university report) have to be certified?
**Answer:**\
At the time of the online application it is not necessary to submit certified hard copies of your documents. It is sufficient to upload scans of your documents and the translations (done by a notarized translator) to the Uni Assist online portal.
## Bachelor's degree in related field
**Question:**\
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in a related field, e.g. cultural economics, health/hospital management etc. Can I apply for your Master’s program?
**Answer:**\
According to our study regulations, a degree from a German university/University of Applied Sciences or an at least an equivalent foreign degree in the same or a related subject with a standard period of study of at least six semesters is required. Degrees in related subjects might be considered if they include at least 90 ECTS in modules with economical content and quantitative methods. In this case, the selection committee decides after the end of the application deadline whether your degree meets these standards.
Please note that the number of your quantitative modules completed in your Bachelor studies is an important evaluation criterion which accounts for 39% of your total evaluation score (see [here](https://www.wiwi.uni-frankfurt.de/en/study/study-programs/master/master-in-management-science/selection-process)).
## Bachelor's degree in unrelated field
**Question:**\
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field, e.g. engineering. Can I apply for your Master’s program?
**Answer:**\
According to our study regulations, a degree from a German university/University of Applied Sciences or an at least an equivalent foreign degree in the same or a related subject with a standard period of study of at least six semesters is required. Degrees in related subjects might be considered if they include at least 90 ECTS in modules with economical content and quantitative methods. In this case, the selection committee decides after the end of the application deadline whether your degree meets these standards.
## Tuition fees
**Question:**\
Are there any tuition fees for the master's program?
**Answer:**\
No, there are no tuition fees for master's students (both EU and non-EU).
However, there is a semester fee which amounts to approximately 334 € per semester. This fee includes unlimited use of public transport in Frankfurt and the whole Federal State of Hessen and access to subsidized meals in the university cafeterias. ## Scholarships
**Question:**\
Do you offer any scholarships?
**Answer:**\
In general, German institutions of higher education do not award scholarships themselves. There are, however, several scholarship-awarding organizations.
The most extensive scholarship program is that offered by [DAAD](http://www.daad.de/en/) (German Academic Exchange Service). Advanced students may apply for DAAD scholarships, or depending on their country of origin and subject, in some cases only graduates may apply.
Other scholarship-awarding institutions have varying conditions, for example, regarding country of origin, subject, previous study achievements, duration of support, etc. A very quick and efficient way of finding out about the appropriate scholarship is through using the scholarship database of DAAD.
## Questions regarding foreign degrees
## Conversion of grades
**Question:**\
How will my final grade be converted?
**Answer:**\
Foreign undergraduate grades will be converted by uni-assist after submission of your application. If you would like to know more about the conversion of your grade please contact the [Global Office of Goethe University](http://www.goethe-university-frankfurt.de/44341978/home).
## Translation of certificates
**Question:**\
Do I need a certified translation of my bachelor degree/transcript? Which languages do you accept for translations?
**Answer:**\
Yes, a certified translation of your documents is necessary if they are not in English. We accept translations into German and English.
## Questions regarding quantitative methods modules
## Additional quantitative methods modules
**Question:**\
Are additionally completed quantitative modules recongnized if they are not listed on my bachelor transcript?
**Answer:**\
Only the modules that are part of the bachelor’s degree relevant for the application to the Master’s degree will be assessed. The modules have to appear in the transcript of records. Other quantitative modules outside your bachelor's degree cannot be recognized in the selection process.
## Quantitative methods modules from second degree
**Question:**\
Is it useful to register e.g. for a bachelor’s degree program in mathematics and to attend some modules there?
**Answer:**\
We only recognize modules which are completed within the required bachelor's degree (e.g. business administration). We do not consider modules from a second, not completed program.
## Not completed quantitative methods modules
**Question:**\
I am taking quantitative methods modules during the summer semester which will not be completed by the end of the application deadline. Will they be considered?
**Answer:**\
No, we only consider passed modules.
## Ungraded quantitative methods modules
**Question:**\
How do you consider ungraded modules?
**Answer:**\
We recognize ungraded quantitative methods modules for which you have received ECTS / credit points when we count the ECTS of your quantitative methods modules.
## Questions regarding German language skills
## Requirement of German proficiency
**Question:**\
Is German language proficiency required for admission?
**Answer:**\
No, German proficiency is not required since the entire program is taught in English.
## Requirement to learn German during studies
**Question:**\
Is it mandatory to attend or complete German language courses during the Master's program?
**Answer:**\
No, you are not obliged to attend any language courses.
## Offer of German language courses
**Question:**\
Are there any German language courses offered for international students?
**Answer:**\
Yes, we offer German language courses for students in our English master's programs. Learn German together with your fellow students and improve your career chances. Please find further information about the courses and the registration here.
## Questions regarding English language skills
## Obligation of English proficiency proof
**Question:**\
Is a proof of my English proficiency obligatory?
**Answer:**\
Yes, a proof of your English proficiency is obligatory. More information regarding different kinds of English certificates can be found in these FAQ and on the [selection process website](https://www.wiwi.uni-frankfurt.de/en/study/study-programs/master/master-in-management-science/selection-process).
## English learned at school
**Question:**\
Is a verification of English language skills learned in High School sufficient?
**Answer:**\
No, English language skills learned in High School are not sufficient.
## Completed English bachelor's program
**Question:**\
I have completed my whole bachelor's studies in English. Do I need an additional language proficiency certificate?
**Answer:**\
We accept your bachelor's studies as a proof of your English skills if you completed your studies in a so-called majority English speaking country. A list of these countries is provided by the [UK Visas and Immigration Department](https://www.gov.uk/tier-4-general-visa/knowledge-of-english):

If you completed your bachelor's degree in a country not listed here, you need to pass an English proficiency test.
## Obligation to take TOEFL/IELTS test
**Question:**\
Is the TOEFL/IELTS test obligatory?
**Answer:**\
Yes, either TOEFL (minimum score: 100 ibt) or IELTS (minimum score: 7) is obligatory. No other language certificates are accepted.
If the applicant holds a Bachelor degree that has been taught in English completely, please read our instructions above ("Completed English bachelor's program").
## GMAT/GRE as a language certificate
**Question:**\
Is it possible to use the GMAT/GRE as a proof of language skills?
**Answer:**\
The GMAT is not a proof of language skills. The knowledge of English has to be proven separately by the TOEFL/IELTS test.
## Recognition of studies abroad
**Question:**\
I have spent a semester abroad and have completed modules in English during my stay. Does this serve as a proof of my English proficiency?
**Answer:**\
No, unfortunately we cannot accept this as sufficient proof of your language skills. Your whole bachelor's program has to be taught in English in order to be recognized as a language proof (see "Completed English bachelor's program").
## Semester/internship abroad
**Question:**\
Is my internship or employment in an English speaking country sufficient to proof my English proficiency?
**Answer:**\
No, unfortunately we cannot accept this as a proof of your English proficiency.
## English modules in bachelor studies
**Question:**\
During my bachelor studies I have completed a couple of module which were taught in English. Is this sufficient as a proof of my English proficiency? Which documents do I need to submit in this case?
**Answer:**\
No, unfortunately we cannot accept this as an English proficiency proof.
## Duration of validity of test results
**Question:**\
I have taken TOEFL more than two years ago. Do I have to retake the test?
**Answer:**\
No, for the admission process test scores are valid for 5 years.
## Questions regarding GMAT / GRE
## Submission of GMAT / GRE results
**Question:**\
Do the official scores for GMAT/GRE directly through GMAT/ETS or does the hardcopy score report have to be submitted as well?
**Answer:**\
A verification that the test has been taken has to be submitted until the deadline for the application. An “unofficial” score may also be submitted along with the application documents. The electronic transfer of score reports by GMAT/ETS may be chosen as well but is not mandatory. It is not possible to hand in the score reports after the deadline has been passed.
## Submission after application deadline
**Question:**\
Is it possible to submit the GMAT / GRE after the application deadline?
**Answer:**\
No, it is not possible to submit any documents after the application deadline.
## Obligation of GMAT / GRE
**Question:**\
Is the GMAT / GRE test obligatory?
**Answer:**\
No, it is not obligatory to pass the GMAT / GRE test. However, the test scores account for 6% of the total score. In case you do not submit a GMAT / GRE test, you receive 0 points for this criterion.
## Minimum score GMAT / GRE
**Question:**\
Do I have to achieve a certain minimum score in the GMAT / GRE test?
**Answer:**\
There is no specified minimum score. The better the test result the more points you get. Please note that we assign points to scores above the 50% percentile.
## Digital submission via institutional code
**Question:**\
Is the submission by institutional code sufficient?
**Answer:**\
You may transmit the results electronically. Nevertheless, please upload a copy of your score report or rather fill in the information in the online application regarding to test results and test dates.
## Period of validity of test results
**Question:**\
I have taken GMAT / GRE test more than two years ago. Do I have to retake the test?
**Answer:**\
No, for the admission process test scores are valid for 5 years (on the day of the application deadline, May 15).
## Alternative tests
**Question:**\
Do you accept alternative tests (e.g. TM-WISO)?
**Answer:**\
No, unfortunately we do not accept other tests than GMAT and GRE.
