# FAQ

On this site, you can find frequently asked questions regarding the application and selection for the Master of Science in Business Administration (Betriebswirtschaftslehre). The questions are categorized as follows:

## Questions regarding the application process

## Information about application status

**Question:**\
I sent my documents to uni assist but why is the status of my application not updated yet?

**Answer:**\
You will only hear from Uni Assist if your university documents are incomplete. Otherwise your application will be forwarded to Goethe University without further comment. It takes about three weeks for your application to be processed. After your application has been forwarded to Goethe University, the status on the Uni Assist portal will change to “forwarded”. Once Goethe University receives your data, you will be notified and given access to the university's student and application portal where you can track your application's status.

## Duration of selection process

**Question:**\
When can I expect to receive an admission letter?

**Answer:**\
Admission will be posted in the first half of July. All applicants admitted will be notified via e-mail and through the university's online portal. You can also enroll via the online portal.

Rejections will be posted in September when the whole admission procedure is completed (including a potential clearing or lottery).

## Clearing procedure

**Question:**\
Is there a clearing procedure in which vacant places are filled?

**Answer:**\
A clearing procedure will only be carried out if there are still vacant places after the main admissions in August. In this case a lower admission threshold score will be determined and further applicants will be admitted. This process would take place around in August.

## Admission lottery

**Question:**\
When does the admission lottery start? How can I take part?

**Answer:**\
The lottery will be carried out if there a still vacant places after the clearing process. The registrar's office is responsible for the drawing of lots. Therefore applicants have to register online to a new deadline. After the deadline has passed the lot will decide about the admission. If all formal requirements for the Master`s program are fulfilled the place will be given to the one who drew the lot. ## Certification of application documents

**Question:**\
Do the submitted documents for the application to the Master’s program have to be certified?

**Answer:**\
At the time of the online application it is not necessary to submit certified hard copies of your documents. Uploading scans of your documents and of the translations (done by a notarized translator) is sufficient.

## Bachelor's degree in related field

**Question:**\
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in a related field, e.g. cultural economics, health/hospital management etc. Can I apply for your Master’s program?

**Answer:**\
According to our study regulations, a degree from a German university/University of Applied Sciences or an at least an equivalent foreign degree in the same or a related subject with a standard period of study of at least six semesters is required. Degrees in related subjects might be considered if they include at least 90 ECTS in modules with economical content and quantitative methods. In this case, the selection committee decides after the end of the application deadline whether your degree meets these standards.

Please note that the number of your quantitative modules completed in your Bachelor studies is an important evaluation criterion which accounts for 39% of your total evaluation score (see [here](https://www.wiwi.uni-frankfurt.de/en/study/study-programs/master/master-in-business-administration/selection-process)).

## Bachelor's degree in unrelated field

**Question:**\
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field, e.g. engineering. Can I apply for your Master’s program?

**Answer:**\
Without sufficient knowledge in Economics, Management or Business Administration (see previous question) an admission is not possible.

## Internships, work experience, volunteering

**Question:**\
Do you consider internships, apprenticeships, studies abroad or social engagement (volunteering) in the admission process?

**Answer:**\
No, internships, apprenticeships, studies abroad, social engagement (volunteering) etc. will not be considered.

## Tution fees

**Question:**\
Are there any tuition fees for the master's program?

**Answer:**\
No, there are no tuition fees for master's students (both EU and non-EU).

However, there is a semester fee which amounts to approximately 350 € per semester. This fee includes unlimited use of public transport in Frankfurt and the whole Federal State of Hessen and access to subsidized meals in the university cafeterias. **Answer:**\

## Questions regarding foreign degrees

## Conversion of grades

**Question:**\
How will my final grade be converted?

**Answer:**\
Foreign undergraduate grades will be converted by uni-assist after submission of your application. ## Translation of certificates

**Question:**\
Do I need a certified translation of my bachelor degree/transcript? Which languages do you accept for translations?

**Answer:**\
Yes, a certified translation of your documents is necessary if they are not in English. We accept translations into German and English.

## Questions regarding quantitative methods modules

## Recognition of additional quantitative methods modules

**Question:**\
Are additionally completed quantitative modules recongnized if they are not listed on my bachelor transcript?

**Answer:**\
Only the modules that are part of the bachelor’s degree relevant for the application to the Master’s degree will be assessed. The modules have to appear in the transcript of records. Other quantitative modules outside your bachelor's degree cannot be recognized in the selection process.

## Recognition of quantitative methods modules from second degree

**Question:**\
Is it useful to register e.g. for a bachelor’s degree program in mathematics and to attend some modules there?

**Answer:**\
We only recognize modules which are completed within the required bachelor's degree (e.g. business administration). We do not consider modules from a second, not completed program.

## Recognition of not completed quantitative methods modules

**Question:**\
I am taking quantitative methods modules during the summer semester which will not be completed by the end of the application deadline. Will they be considered?

**Answer:**\
No, we only consider passed modules.

## Recognition of ungraded quantitative methods modules

**Question:**\
How do you consider ungraded modules?

**Answer:**\
We recognize ungraded quantitative methods modules for which you have received ECTS / credit points when we count the ECTS of your quantitative methods modules. However, we do not consider these modules for the average grade of your quantitative methods modules.

## Questions regarding German language skills

## German language skills at the A1/A2 level

**Question:**\
I am an international applicant with German knowledge at the A1/A2 level according to the European Common Framework of Reference. Can I apply for the MSc in Business Administration?

**Answer:**\
Unfortunately application with proof of German at the A1/A2 level cannot be accepted.

Applicants are required to have reached at least the B1/B2 level in order to participate in a preparatory German course leading up to the DSH-2 exam. Applicants that already acquired German knowledge at the C1 level can apply directly for the master's program but need to hand in the DSH-2 certificate before starting the program.

## German language skills at the B1/B2 level

**Question:**\
I am an international applicant and I hold a German language certificate at the B1/B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Can I apply for the MSc in Business Administration?

**Answer:**\
Unfortunately you cannot apply for immediate entry into the master's program. Instead you would have to attend a language course to reach the competency level required. Goethe University offers German courses which will prepare you for the DSH-2 examination required for entry into a master's program.

If you would like to participate in the preparatory course please do apply for the MSc in Business Administration via uni assist. When filling in the application, please indicate that you would like to participate in the preparatory German course. You will then be invited to take an assessment of your German language skills. After having passed the DSH-2 examination you would have to re-apply for the MSc in Business Administration.

## German language skills at the C1 level

**Question:**\
I am an international applicant and hold a German language certificate at the C1 level. Is this sufficient for the application?

**Answer:**\
You can apply for the MSc in Business Administration. If you are admitted to the program, you need to hand in a DSH-2 certificate (or an equivalent certificate). During the application process you will be invited to take the DSH-2 examination at Goethe University. This invitation is no admission to the master's program.

International students will be exempt from DSH-2 if they present one of the following language certificates upon application/matriculation:

- TestDaF with 4 TDN in all test components
- Goethe-Zertifikat C2
- KMK-Prüfung: Deutsches Sprachdiplom Stufe II (DSD II), Level C1 in all test components
- DSH of other universities with a DSH-2 result (Please notice: DSH-certificates that are issued after 1 January 2013 will only be accepted if they are registered by the Hochschulrektorenkonferenz (HRK) according to the new Rahmenordnung Deutsch)
- ZOP (Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung)
- KDS und GDS (Kleines/Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom)
- a german school leaving certificate (e.g. Realschulabschluss)

## Questions regarding English language skills

## English learned in school

**Question:**\
Is a verification of English language skills learned in High School sufficient?

**Answer:**\
Yes, English language skills learned in High School are sufficient if your high school diploma explicitly states the level B2. Furthermore, your language certificate has to be not older than 5 years at the end of the application deadline (May 15).

## Obligation of English proficiency proof

**Question:**\
Is a proof of my English proficiency obligatory?

**Answer:**\
Yes, a proof of your English proficiency is obligatory. More information regarding different kinds of English certificates can be found in these FAQ and on the selection process website.

## Obligation to take TOEFL/IELTS test

**Question:**\
Is the TOEFL test obligatory?

**Answer:**\
The TOEFL is not necessarily obligatory. You can also send in other verification of your English language skills (except for verification of High School English language skills, see above). However, it is important that you can verify knowledge of the English language at the B2 level of the European Reference Score for Languages.

If the applicant holds a Bachelor degree that has been taught in English completely, no extra proof of English language skills has to be submitted. In addition, the verification of single modules completely taught in English is sufficient (see below).

## GMAT/GRE as a language certificate

**Question:**\
Is it possible to use the GMAT/GRE as a proof of language skills?

**Answer:**\
The GMAT is not a proof of language skills. The knowledge of English has to be proven separately by standardized test, a language course in the university (B2 level) or through your high school diploma (explicitly stating the B2 level).

## Recognition of studies abroad

**Question:**\
I have spent a semester abroad and have completed modules in English during my stay. Does this serve as a proof of my English proficiency?

**Answer:**\
No, this is not sufficient.

## Semester/internship abroad

**Question:**\
Is my internship or employment in an English speaking country sufficient to proof my English proficiency?

**Answer:**\
No, unfortunately we cannot accept this as a proof of your English proficiency.

## English modules in bachelor studies

**Question:**\
During my bachelor studies I have completed a couple of module which were taught in English. Is this sufficient as a proof of my English proficiency? Which documents do I need to submit in this case?

**Antwort:**\
The successful completion of bachelor modules which have been taught in English is not sufficient to proof your Enlish proficiency. In case you have completed a language course as part of your studies, you need a document explicitly stating the level B2.

## Duration of validity of language certificates

**Question:**\
For how long does my proof of English proficiency remain valid?

**Answer:**\
We accept language certificates which are up to five years old on the day of the application deadline (May 15). Language certificates which are older than 5 years on May 15 cannot be considered in the application process.
