The master's programme Mathematics at the University of Vienna offers a lot of flexibility. Students choose 30 ECTS from a list of core courses in order to consolidate their foundations and to broaden their mathematical perspectives. They dive deeper into a particular area by completing 30 ECTS from the specialization module and 8 ECTS of reading seminars. The programme is topped off by 22 ECTS of electives that can also come from adjacent areas like physics, computer science or economy, depending on the mathematical specialization. The last semester is devoted to the writing of the master's thesis and the thesis defence concludes the programme.

Study Programme

Within the Master's programme in Mathematics, there are two types of courses: ‘Core’ courses, which are standardised and consist of a core lecture (VO npi, 4 SSt, 6 ECTS) and the corresponding core proseminar (PS pi, 2 SSt, 4 ECTS), and ‘specialisation’ courses, which do not have to follow a fixed format. Core courses are designed for students with prior knowledge from a typical Bachelor's programme in Mathematics, while specialisation courses build on core courses. In addition, seminars in the various specialisations are offered to prepare students for their Master's thesis and defence.
