Alongside the Rectorate and the Senate, the University Board is the highest governing body of the University of Vienna.
It consists of nine members who serve for a term of office of five years (currently until February 2028). The members are requested to be appointed in equal numbers by the university and the federal government and jointly elect a ninth member.
As a rule, the University Board meets six times a year in plenary session. In the interests of compliance and transparency, an annual report on its activities is published.
In fulfilling its tasks, the University Board also acts as an interface between the public sector and society. The University Board elects the rector from a list of three candidates proposed by the Senate and the Vice-Rectors on the recommendation of the rector. Based on proposals from the Rectorate, it approves the organizational plan and the development plan. These concern the basic organizational structure of the university and the strategic planning of its future development.
The Office of the University Board supports the University Board in fulfilling its duties.
