Research at the University of Vienna
The University of Vienna is one of the most internationally renowned research universities. We consider both basic and applied research as a global endeavour in which we strive for excellence.
We recognise that many new ideas arise at the interfaces between different disciplines. That is why we particularly foster interdisciplinary exchange in six strategic priorities in research that contribute to solving societal challenges.

The University of Vienna is strongly committed to raising the visibility of women in research. Each year, the university takes part in the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, which was first initiated by the United Nations to raise awareness of the gender gap in STEM disciplines. Our participation aims to inspire, scrutinise and demonstrate how we can achieve equal access to and participation in science for women and girls.
On 11 February, the university highlights profiles of female academics working at the Faculty of Life Sciences, the CeMESS centre, the Data Science research network and the interinstitutional Max Perutz Labs. This spotlight showcases the range of initiatives that promote equal opportunities and the visibility of women in science.

International cooperations
The University of Vienna’s diverse research reaches deep into everyday life. Just as intriguing as the research findings themselves are the processes and the people behind them.
Across various locations in Vienna and the federal provinces, visitors are invited to take a behind-the-scenes look. The University of Vienna also brings research to life through a rich and varied programme of public events.
The strategic priorities bundle and channel activities in research, teaching and the promotion of young researchers. It is the basis of our international networks (e.g., via Circle U.) and national collaborations.
They are socially relevant, interdisciplinarily interconnected and internationally visible, promoting the success of cooperative, international third-party funded projects (e.g., EU missions).
