Since 2007, academics at the University of Vienna have successfully acquired **162 ERC grants**, demonstrating the **high quality of basic research** conducted at the University and its strong **international competitiveness**.

The promotion of **pioneering basic research** is a key priority of the European Union, which established the **European Research Council (ERC)** to support this mission. The ERC funds research projects with high potential for **academic breakthroughs** and **innovation** through various grant categories: Starting Grants, Consolidator Grants, Advanced Grants, Synergy Grants, and Proof of Concept Grants.
