Ein Beleg für unsere hohe Qualität in der Grundlagenforschung und internationalen Wettbewerbsfähigkeit sind die 162 ERC Grants, die Wissenschafter*innen der Universität Wien seit 2007 erfolgreich eingeworben haben. Die Förderung von grundlagenorientierter Pionierforschung ist einer der Schwerpunkte der Europäischen Union, die dafür den Europäischen Forschungsrat (European Research Council, ERC) geschaffen hat. Gefördert werden Forschungsprojekte mit hohem Potenzial für wissenschaftliche Durchbrüche und Innovationen durch die unterschiedlichen ERC Grants (Starting, Consolidator, Advanced, Synergy und Proof of Concept).
