The master’s programme in Applied Linguistics aims at providing an advanced education in a range of socially relevant areas of application for linguistics. Students acquire key competences in the area of empiric text and discourse analysis, enabling them to independently deal with socially relevant issues and produce new results in the areas of language minority research, language policy, research on linguistic prejudice, linguistic organisational research, media communication and research on language teaching and language learning.

Study Programme

The master’s programme consists of five compulsory modules. Module four has to be selected either from the subject area focusing on discourse analysis and sociolinguistics or from the subject area focusing on language education research and language policy. The modules cover the subject areas of discourse analysis and sociolinguistics, research on language teaching and language learning, language policy, methods of applied linguistics, philosophy of science and history of science. To complete the programme, students have to write a master’s thesis.
