Students completing a student exchange within the framework of Erasmus+ receive an Erasmus+ grant in addition to the exemption of tuition fees abroad. This is a partial grant to cover the additional costs due to the stay abroad.

Erasmus+ grant

Students can apply for semester spots only. The specific duration of the financial support for the Erasmus+ stay is determined by the University of Vienna for each academic year based on the Erasmus+ budget available to the University of Vienna. For students nominated during the main application round (Hauptvergabephase), the financially supported period covers at least 3 months. The actual maximum funding duration will be communicated each summer for the following academic year. Please note: during the second application round (Restplatzvergabephase) Erasmus+ spots will generally be allocated without a grant. (Partial) funding may be possible after reviewing the funding budget.

The programme countries are divided into four country groups as defined in the European Commission's Programme Guide. The exact grant depends on the host country. In the academic year 2025/26 amounts to:

In general, you should take classes worth 30 ECTS credits per semester. The reimbursement threshold for the mobility grant depends on the duration of your stay. If you do not complete at least 3 ETCS per month of stay, the grant must be returned (only the ECTS recognised in the nominated field of studies at the University of Vienna are relevant!). 

The Erasmus+ grant is paid in two instalments: 70% at the start of the stay and 30% after the stay (from the academic year 2024/25 onwards). The final calculation of the grant is based on the actual number of days of stay. An average of 30 days per month is used for this calculation.

Recipients of the Austrian federal aid for students ("Studienbeihilfe") can apply for financial aid for studies abroad ("Auslandsbeihilfe") from the Study Grant Authority.


Tuition fees

You are exempt from paying tuition fees at the University of Vienna and at the host university for the duration of your Erasmus+ stay. However, it is absolutely necessary to pay the students’ union fee (ÖH-Beitrag) within the deadline, even during your semester abroad, in order to ensure that you remain enrolled at the University of Vienna. Please note that some host universities also charge incoming Erasmus+students similar fees (comparable to the students’ union fee) – you cannot be exempted from these fees.

A leave of absence from the University of Vienna will not be granted during a semester abroad. For more detailed information, please have a look at the Teaching Affairs and Student Services website. However, if you are also enrolled in another degree programme at a different Austrian University you may be able to take a leave of absence from this degree programme for the duration of your Erasmus+ stay. Please contact the respective university for further information.

Students who have been admitted to study at several universities simultaneously must notify each one of these universities of their stay abroad if they wish to remain enrolled.

No additional semester ("Toleranzsemester") will be granted because of an Erasmus+ stay abroad, that is to say, students must remain within the prescribed minimum duration of study + 2 "semesters of tolerance".

Please note, however, that an Erasmus+ stay might entitle you to an additional semester of family allowance ("Familienbeihilfe").


Financial top-ups

In addition to the Erasmus+ grant, further financial support (grants and top-ups) can be applied for, depending on the academic year.


Travel support

From the academic year 2024/2025 onwards, participants will be paid a travel support for the trip. The amount of the travel support depends on the distance between Vienna as the place of origin and the location of the host university and is paid out as a lump sum.

The application is submitted via Mobility Online to the home institution (2 months before the start of the stay at the earliest). As soon as this is possible, you will be informed via e-mail. The application must be submitted up to 1 month before the start of the Erasmus+ stay!

Please note: According to the guidelines of the European Commission and the Austrian National Agency as the funding organisation, no double funding is permitted! - Environmentally friendly travel

Means of transportation that are considered environmentally friendly are: bicycle, bus, train, carpooling. For a trip to be classified as environmentally friendly, at least 60% of the journey must be made by a means of transport classified as environmentally friendly (bus, train, bicycle, carpooling).

Please make sure to document your trip sufficiently (personalized train/bus tickets, debit confirmations, payment confirmations, fuel receipts, in the case of carpooling receipts for joint costs, etc.). Personalized tickets and receipts must be kept for at least 10 years in case of an audit. - Travel Support Calculation

- Payment

70% of the approved amount will be paid out before the stay as soon as the signed agreement is received by the Erasmus+ Stipendien Team. The remaining 30% are paid after the stay upon submission of the confirmation of stay.


Inclusion Support

Inclusion support is intended to cover additional financial costs incurred primarily by participants with physical, mental or health issues. Inclusion support is intended to help students become mobile. Instead of a lump sum being paid out, the actual real costs incurred, for example due to health problems, are to be covered. Inclusion support (based on actual costs) and a top-up (fixed increase in individual support) can be received at the same time.

Erasmus+ students who belong to the defined participants with fewer opportunities (students with child/children, students with health impairments).

Erasmus+ students with fewer opportunities, who can prove that they have a real need for additional financial support on a real cost basis. - When is the application deadline?

The deadline for applications is three months before the start of the stay. If you have any questions about the application process or require further information, please contact the Erasmus+ Stipendien team as early as possible (erasmus.stipendien@univie.ac.at;)).

Please note that applying for inclusion support always means additional effort. You should therefore start planning your stay abroad and seek advice as soon as possible. - How are the additional costs for inclusion support calculated?

The additional costs incurred abroad are always calculated in comparison to the living and working situation in the sending country. Estimated costs without price research and enclosures cannot be considered.

Examples of additional costs: travel costs for medical examinations, accompanying person, school costs, increased therapy costs etc. - Which costs are NOT included in inclusion support?

Once the Erasmus+ inclusion grant has been approved, the University of Vienna will issue you an agreement for this additional funding. After signing, you will receive the inclusion grant. - What proof/documents are required for the final accounting of the inclusion support?

After your Erasmus+ stay, you must send ALL invoices to your university, i.e. original/electronic invoices together with proof of payment and validated tickets.

Please note: You must keep official invoices for all expenses paid via the Erasmus+ inclusion grant.

The costs can be incurred from the date on which the written commitment (nomination) for an Erasmus+ stay was made. - Where can I find more information about inclusion and accessibility?
