The ties between the University of Vienna and eleven Nobel Prize laureates underscore its significance as an international centre of research. To date, fifteen of its researchers have received the Wittgenstein Award – Austria’s most prestigious and well-funded scientific award.

The excellence initiative excellent=austria, launched by the FWF and the Federal Ministry of Women, Science and Research, specifically supports top-level research at Austrian universities and research institutions. The University of Vienna has successfully secured funding for outstanding research projects through this programme.

- Theresa Nohl received the 2024 reviewer award of the Geological Society of London

Through the Univie Teaching Awards, the University of Vienna highlights the importance it places on teaching. The award recognises outstanding teaching achievements and showcases examples of excellent teaching both within the University and to the wider public.
The Univie Entrepreneurship Award honours aspiring founders for their innovative ideas.
Both awards demonstrate the diverse ways the University of Vienna supports, celebrates, and makes visible excellence in teaching, research and societal impact.
