Doctoral Education at the University of Vienna
Training the next generation of researchers and supporting young talents to become independent and internationally competitive is a central mission of the University of Vienna. With its newly established doctoral schools, the University of Vienna offers early stage researchers the opportunity to participate in cutting edge research within structured programmes and to be mentored by world-class supervisors.
The doctoral programme
At the University of Vienna, the doctoral programme entails training through research. It is a three-years programme that includes the writing of a dissertation and a training component. However, PhD candidates devote most of their time conducting novel research that adds new knowledge to their field. Excellent supervision and teaching, as well as an inspiring research environment, prepare PhD candidates for a wide range of careers and responsibilities, both inside and outside academia. Moreover, the doctoral schools provide a home for a vibrant PhD community and foster exchange with peers at a high academic level.
