The master’s programme in Advanced Theological Studies provides a specialised theological education at master’s level for students who do not have the same level of knowledge as graduates of the diploma programme in Catholic Theology. It aims at equipping students with the competences required for a doctoral or PhD programme.

The master’s programme consists of the following modules: Compulsory module on theology in the European context; alternative compulsory modules (basics of theology and philosophy); compulsory module on a theological specialisation; compulsory module on current theological research; compulsory master’s module, master’s thesis and master’s examination.

After Graduation

Graduates of the master’s programme in Advanced Theological Studies at the University of Vienna are qualified to conduct independent research on the different disciplines of Catholic theology. They are able to present theological knowledge in the area of religious journalism and adult education, participate in interdisciplinary research on religious questions and work for church institutions.
