In the master’s programme in Theatre, Film and Media Studies you will deal with theatre, film and media from a cultural studies perspective. The degree programme is research-led, meaning it is oriented to theoretical and analytical questions. The history, aesthetics and theory of the subject areas are equally discussed. Students have the possibility to set their own focus and, if desired, to concentrate on one of the three areas. Having completed a degree programme in Cultural Studies is an important admission requirement. Moreover, experiences and competences in at least one of the three fields are appreciated.

Study Programme

The degree programme offers great freedom for setting your own focus. Competence-oriented seminars, that are designed in a dialogical manner, are the core component. Independent reading and preparation, discussions in the course (but also beyond), joint subject analysis, and working in groups will characterise your everyday university life. There is also space for experimental forms and topics - such as artistic research, project research or an open module that you can design according to your own ideas and interests. Political theory, dance theatre, inter-war film, sound studies, baroque music theatre, horror films and social media - it is the diversity that makes this degree programme special. The study programme is characterised by numerous collaborations with cultural institutions, theatres and festivals.
