The master’s programme in Scandinavian Studies aims at providing students with a systematic understanding of Scandinavian languages and literatures and their relationship to society and culture in the past and present. The master’s programme focuses on the entire Scandinavian region and places particular emphasis on the following areas: language and society, literature as a cultural practice, as well as modern approaches to Old Norse studies. Furthermore, students have the opportunity to specialise in Scandinavian linguistics, literature studies or Old Norse studies.

## Study Programme

The master’s programme in Scandinavian Studies consists of the following compulsory modules: Language and Society in Scandinavia, Scandinavian Literature in a Cultural Context, Modern Approaches to Old Norse Studies, and Topics of Research. Students have to select one of the following alternative compulsory modules: Scandinavian Linguistics – Topics of Research, Scandinavian Literature Studies – Topics of Research, Old Norse Studies – Topics of Research. In addition, students have to complete an internship (or a project). To successfully complete the programme, students have to write a master’s thesis and pass a master’s examination.
