Welcome to the Department of History!

The Department of History at Stockholm University is the most extensive history department in Sweden. It houses the largest undergraduate program with over 170 students beginning their history studies each semester. Research at the department spans from the Middle Ages to modern times.

We offer a variety of courses and programs in History and in Cultural Studies. Our courses and programs are mainly with Swedish as language of instruction.

Our research

Historical research at Stockholm University enjoys a strong position nationally as well as internationally. The department conducts research in gender history, digital history, history of sports, climate and environmental history, maritime history, urban history, medieval studies, early modern history, and modern history.

Research centers

The department has specialized research centers in medieval studies, maritime history, and urban history. Ongoing research is presented regularly through the centers' seminar series.
