Arabic is one of the world’s five most widely spoken languages, and the primary language throughout most of the Middle East and North Africa with more than 300 million speakers. Learning Arabic, you gain access to a rich cultural tradition, as well as knowledge and insight into the contemporary Middle East and North Africa.

Subject description

During your studies at Stockholm University you will acquire proficiency in Arabic and become more knowledgeable about the literature, history, religion, economics, politics and social developments in the Middle East and North Africa.

The courses will provide theoretical and practical skills useful both in future employment and further academic studies. You will learn modern standard Arabic and will be afforded the opportunity to study one of the Arabic dialects.

Career opportunities

Our students usually combine studies in Arabic with courses in other subjects, such as political science, economics, ethnology, pedagogics, sociology, history or linguistics. Former students are employed by the Swedish government agencies such as the Swedish Migration Agency, Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), in business, media and international organizations, and also as interpreters.
