China is the world’s most populous nation and second largest economy. China is constantly changing, and through studying Chinese you gain access to its rich culture, thousand-year-old history and fascinating social development. Not to mention being able to communicate with more than a billion Chinese speakers!

Subject description

During the course of your studies you will gain proficiency in modern standardized Chinese, Putonghua. The courses are 75% language, and 25% content courses on a variety of subjects, such as Chinese history, traditional culture and politics.

Beginner courses in Chinese are offered every autumn semester as part of the six semesters required to attain a bachelor’s degree. All courses are offered as freestanding courses.

During your sixth semester you will produce a bachelor’s thesis partly based on Chinese language sources.

Through our exchange programme with Jilin University you will be afforded the opportunity to study in China during the third semester.

After completing your bachelor’s degree, you will be eligible to enrol in our two-year Master’s Programme in Asian Studies, which affords an opportunity to deepen your skills in Chinese language and culture, as well as learning more about Asia as a region. During the master’s programme you will have the opportunity to study abroad or participate in an internship. With a master’s degree you will also be eligible to apply to our doctoral programme.

Career opportunities

Our students usually combine studies in Chinese with courses in other subjects, such as economics or political science. Our students have pursued careers at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and in the media. Some work for travel agencies, as translators, teachers and researchers.
