Subject description

Religion has always been an integral part of human societies, attempting to answer questions of how the world came into being and how and why the world is organised in the way it is. Religion addresses questions of the place of humans in the universe and the meaning of life. Religion is a central part of many people’s identities and guides their choices in their everyday life and social relationships. Religion is also a powerful force that influences society and political life locally, nationally and globally.

As a student of the history of religions, you will meet a wide range of religious traditions from different parts of the world both historical and extant. We study Judaism, Christianity and Islam besides Asian religions, such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Daoism and Shinto. The ancient religions of Greece and Rome, as well as the Old Norse religion are explored together with new religious movements.

The studies focus on the historical development of these religions, the variety of their ideas and practices as well as their significance for the individual, society and culture. You will become acquainted with institutions, ideas and rituals of the great religious traditions but even religion as it is lived by ordinary people in their everyday lives. Since we view religion as a historical, cultural and social phenomenon we will study it from historical, anthropological, psychological and sociological perspectives.
