Maastricht University (UM) is a registered participant in the SallieMae programme. SallieMae is a loan provider in the U.S. that offers private loans to American nationals only to cover the costs of studying such as tuition fees, room, board and travel expenses.
SallieMae is an alternative for students who are not eligible for Federal U.S. Direct Loans (FAFSA) or who apply for a non-eligible programme at Maastricht University, for example, one that is less than half time, Summer School, Medicine or for independent bachelor’s students.
Eligibility
SallieMae offers private student loans. These are based on your credit profile. Your credit—and your cosigner’s credit, if you have one—are evaluated, along with other information provided in your application.
Please note that Federal US Direct Loans usually have lower interest rates than private student loans and can offer different benefits. You should generally consider them first, and then take out a private student loan if you still need additional money to finance your studies.

Types of loans
SallieMae generally offers two types of loans:
- Smart Option Loans for undergraduate (bachelor’s) students
- Graduate Loans for graduate (master’s and PhD) students
Application procedure
Please take the following steps to apply for a SallieMae private loan:
- Fill out the UM Questionnaire (log in with your UM account).
- After submitting the UM Questionnaire, keep an eye on your UM email inbox. The UM Financial Aid Officer will send you the cost of attendance for your study programme. You need this for your SallieMae loan application.
- Complete your loan application on the SallieMae website.
