Beating the binge

Binge eating, the uncontrolled consumption of large amounts of food in a short timeframe, is a common phenomenon with many negative consequences. Strategies to successfully reduce binge eating exist, but they have shown to be difficult to implement in daily life, especially in the ‘heat-of-the-moment’. Implementation of existing strategies could be enhanced by providing appropriate in-the-moment support in daily life.

Ecological momentary interventions (EMIs) are well-suited for this. EMIs use observations from daily life – obtained with ecological momentary assessment (EMA) – to determine when and how to intervene. The Beating the Binge programme is an EMI that uses EMA input to predict binge eating, and to alert individuals when at risk of a binge eating episode. When warned, or at any desired moment, individuals have direct access to their personal notes and strategies via a personalized dashboard in the app. In this study, we will test the potential of this EMI.

Participation is limited to Dutch-speaking individuals living or studying in the Netherlands or Belgium. For more information, please visit the Dutch version of our website (Eetbuien de Baas) or keep an eye out for (new) publications.
