When you are studying at Maastricht University you will need to pay tuition fees. On this page you can find more information about how tuition fees are set up in the Netherlands and the factors that play a part in determining which tuition fee rate you will have to pay for your studies.

Tuition fees in the Netherlands

As a student, you are required to pay tuition fees for each academic year for which you are enrolled. Within the Dutch higher education system two different kinds of tuition fees exist: the statutory tuition fees and the institutional tuition fees. \

Government subsidies

The reason for this is that Dutch universities receive a government subsidy for students who are from EU/EEA countries (or Switzerland or Suriname) for one bachelor’s programme  as long as they have not obtained a bachelor’s degree from a Dutch higher education institution and for one master’s programme as long as  they have not already obtained a master’s degree from a Dutch higher education institution. Universities do not receive this government subsidy for students with a nationality from non-EU/EEA countries. 

Given this government subsidy, the tuition fees that students with a nationality from EU/EEA countries (or Switzerland or Suriname) need to pay (the statutory tuition fees), are lower than the tuition fees that students with a nationality from non-EU/EEA countries need to pay (the institutional tuition fees). \

Three levels of institutional tuition fees

In addition, there are three levels of institutional tuition fees (low, high and top) because the government has divided all study programmes into three types (low cost, high cost, and higher cost). This division is based on the nature of the study programmes and the facilities that are required to offer high quality education. So, the exact amount of the institutional tuition fees depends on a student’s study programme. \

Small-scale education, part-time programmes and February starting dates

Also, the statutory tuition fees for some study programmes are raised because these programmes offer small-scale and intensive education. And a limited number of master's programmes offer the option to study part-time and/or to start in February instead of September, which also affects the amount of tuition fees a student will need to pay for the academic year in question.  \

Rates determined per academic year

Tuition fee rates (both the institutional and statutory) are determined per academic year. This means that the tuition fees for a new academic year may differ from the previous academic year, because of the annual indexation of the statutory tuition rate by the government and the amended determination of the institutional fees by the UM based on the government modified funding rules.

Sometimes you are eligible for paying the tuition fee rate for students with a EU/EEA-nationality if you are astudent with a non-EU/EEA-nationality. This depends on your residence status in a EU/EER country. You can find more information here.

If you are a student with a nationality from the EU/EEA and are following two study programmes simultaniously, you may be eligible for a reduced statutory tuition fee.

Exceptions

• For the UCM, MSP and Global Studies bachelor's programmes, the tuition fee rate for EU/EEA students (statutory) has been increased by a surcharge for the Special Characteristics Small-scale and Intensive (Bijzonder Kenmerk Kleinschalig en Intensief or BKKI) education; this BKKI surcharge is also applied to the applicable institutional tuition fee rate (except for Global Studies). The bachelor’s BKKI statutory tuition fees are: €4,310.
• Please note: students who started in MSP in (or before) the academic year 2019/20, remain exempt from the increase due to the MSP 'small-scale and intensive education' and pay €2,694 for their enrolment when re-enrolling for the academic year 2026/27.
• For the master's programme Forensic Psychology the tuition fee rate for EU/EEA students (statutory) has been increased with a surcharge. The master’s BKKI statutory tuition fees are: €4,700.

• There are three different tuition fee levels for non-EU/EEA students (institutional): low, high and top.
• For the UCM and MSP bachelor's programmes, the tuition fee rate for students with a non-EU/EEA-nationality (institutional) has been increased by a surcharge for the Special Characteristics Small-scale and Intensive (BKKI) education; this BKKI surcharge is also applied to the statutory tuition fee rate. The bachelor’s BKKI institutional tuition fees are: €20,109.

Please note: enrolment per academic year \ If you are following a three-year bachelor’s programme or a master’s programme with a nominal duration of more than 1 year, you need to (re-)enrol via Studielink for every academic year of this study programme. For each separate academic year, enrolment requires that you pay the indicated tuition fees for the respective study programme (for example via a digital authorisation for automatic payment in instalments). If you need more time to complete your study programme than the nominal established number of years (bachelor’s programmes take 3 years / master’s programmes take between 1 and 4 years) this will require you to re-enrol for an additional academic year and, as such, to pay tuition fees for an additional academic year. Tuition fees are indexed every year and can therefore vary from year to year. Make sure you keep in mind that you might face unforeseen circumstances that will result in needing an additional academic year to complete your study programme. This means you will need to invest not only extra time, but also extra money for (amongst others) re-enrolment, to acquire your diploma.
