At Maastricht University, sustainability is a cornerstone of our education programmes, our research and our everyday operations. The UM Sustainability Roadmap 2030, our sustainability strategy, will guide that process. Going sustainable as a university is not a one-day task, nor a one-way street. It’s a path towards a goal that is always moving. Since ideas about what is sustainable change quite regularly, sustainability is not a box you check once and leave at that.

Because sustainability is a fluid goal, our approach is flexible and multifaceted. We will highlight sustainability projects initiated by students, staff members, and the university itself. Some may focus on changing personal habits, others on improving the university grounds, but all of them bring us one step closer to our goals.

UM’s Footprint in Figures
Data monitoring is essential to achieving Maastricht University’s ambitious sustainability goals. To ensure proper monitoring and transparency, the interactive Sustainability Dashboard has been launched. The dashboard currently contains information on the university’s gas, water and electricity consumption over the past four years.

Maastricht University signs national manifesto ‘Duurzaam denken, duurzaam doen’
Maastricht University (UM) has signed the manifesto ‘Duurzaam denken, duurzaam doen’ (‘Sustainable Thinking, Sustainable Action’), thereby underlining its ambition to structurally embed sustainability in education, research, operations and governance.

Winners of the Sustainable UM Research Seed Fund 2025–2026
