The Hub specialises in European public affairs, drawing on the expertise cultivated by Campus Brussels as UM’s embassy in the European Union capital. The Brussels Hub supports initiatives focused on European collaboration in education, research, and innovation, aligned with UM's strategic priorities. Moreover, it serves as a platform to showcase UM's proficiency in the European arena, enhancing the visibility and networking opportunities for the community in a supportive 'home away from home' environment. In this capacity, the UM Brussels Hub plays a vital role in positioning UM as the European University of the Netherlands.

On 3 October 2024, Maastricht University (UM) inaugurated its new Brussels representation, the Maastricht University Brussels Hub. The event was attended by UM staff, UM alumni, European Union officials, regional and national representatives, international partners, and Brussels-based stakeholders from the education, research, and innovation sector. The inauguration revolved around the theme “Joining forces between academia and policy to tackle Europe’s priorities”in the framework of the new European mandate that emerged from the recent European Parliament elections and appointment of the new European Commission currently underway.

The programme featured a mix of academics and policymakers, including Prof. Dr. Rianne Letschert (UM President), Ambassador Michael Stibbe, Ms. Magda De Carli (European Commission), and Prof. Dr. Christine Neuhold (UM Dean). Their speeches highlighted UM's European ambitions, the need for greater investment in education, research, and innovation, and the importance of stronger collaboration between academia and policymakers. The event concluded with a symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony, emphasizing cooperation between UM, the Dutch Government, and the European Union.
