As Maastricht University’s Centre for Teaching & Learning, EDLAB provides expertise, support, and interdisciplinary collaboration opportunities for staff and students to enhance the quality of education at UM.

Our mission revolves around three pillars:
- Expertise: We foster a strong foundation for quality education through research and continuous innovation.
- Support: We facilitate professional development in the field of education, ensuring educators have the resources they need.
- Community: We actively engage with the education community, promoting collaboration and knowledge sharing.
\ Activities and events offered by EDLAB include professional development training workshops and conferences such as the annual UM Education Days. In 2024, EDLAB received substantial funding to enhance teaching and learning at Maastricht University from 2024 to 2027.

From stuck to sparked: insights from EDLAB's 13th Student-Meet
Feeling stuck happens. At Student-Meet Vol. 13, UM students came together at EDLAB to explore how inspiration works and how small actions can help get things moving again.
AI Café: students in conversation about AI and education
AI Café was created as a student-led community for open, insightful conversations about artificial intelligence in education. The first meeting on 26 February 2026 brought that idea to life with students sharing their experiences with AI.

Following his keynote at the Sixth Global Citizenship Education Symposium, Jason Goulah continued the conversation in a discussion with an EDLAB research assistant, focusing on a central question: how can education remain meaningfully human in an age of artificial intelligence?

Donna Carroll reports on a UM student survey showing that students’ unsupervised use of GenAI is often driven by opportunity, pressure and rationalisation, in line with the classic fraud triangle and helping explain why some outsource their work while others use AI more constructively.

Innovating education\ At EDLAB, we’re committed to fostering a culture of educational innovation and development at Maastricht University, supporting teachers, education researchers and students.

Professional development\ We offer a wide range of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities, including workshops, training courses and online resources. We also support education innovation and research through grants and fellowships. On top of that, EDLAB organises events throughout the year, like conferences, seminars, the annual UM Education Days, and interactive sessions such as Teach-Meets and Student-Meets. These gatherings are great opportunities to connect, share ideas and learn from others in the field.

At EDLAB, we further develop, implement, and centrally coordinate these programmes. ESAB: Students as education partners\ The EDLAB Student Advisory Board (ESAB) represents the student community and hosts several Student-Meet sessions throughout the year.
Outreach
EDLAB engages with external parties and stakeholders in the field of knowledge on education, be they teaching staff from other education institutes, organisations that collaborate with EDLAB's Excellence programmes, external professional training companies, or other Centres for Teaching & Learning in the Netherlands and abroad.
