# Medieval studies

Work across multiple disciplines to understand this fascinating period, from late antiquity to the 15th century, and across the world from the Middle East and the Mediterranean to the British Isles and Scandinavia.

Decipher historical manuscripts, study ancient writing systems, and speak and write in medieval languages. At St Andrews, you can take on different theoretical approaches in the fields of:

- art history
- divinity
- history
- languages
- literature
- philosophy

## Undergraduate

St Andrews does not currently offer a single Honours degree in medieval studies. However, many undergraduate degree programmes in other subjects include aspects of medievalism, including art history, medieval history, modern languages, archaeology, English, divinity, and philosophy.

## Postgraduate research

Research in medieval studies at St Andrews is distributed through several Schools and Departments. The University currently has three research centres and institutes related to medieval studies:

The St Andrews Institute of Medieval Studies (SAIMS) teaches and researches medieval studies through multiple subject lenses. SAIMS offers both an interdisciplinary MLitt in Medieval Studies and PhD opportunities.
