# Association of Commonwealth Universities

Founded in 1913, the Association of Commonwealth Universities is the world's oldest university network. Today, it has over [400 member universities](https://www.acu.ac.uk/our-members/) in 47 countries and territories. 70% of member universities are in low or middle income countries. The Association of Commonwealth Universities aims to build a better world through higher education. Through their education, research and community engagement, its member universities make a key contribution to addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The University of St Andrews has a long history of Commonwealth ties. St Andrews established its oldest student exchange with Queen’s University, Canada in 1948. St Andrews graduates and staff made notable contributions to Commonwealth universities, including playing a [key role](https://uwimuseum.wordpress.com/2013/09/18/st-andrews-uni-connection/) in establishing the University of the West Indies.

Today, St Andrews has longstanding and new partnerships in the Commonwealth across all areas of activity. Examples include:

- [Global PhDs](https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/study-abroad/global-research/) with Macquarie University, Australia.
- Research projects across the Commonwealth.
