You can find lots of starting points for generating career ideas, including websites designed specifically for students studying science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects who want to explore their options.

• The Science Council's 10 Types of Scientist is a useful resource exploring a variety of jobs that require knowledge and application of science

• Opportunities in science podcast
• Step into the NHS quiz to help you to identify health related careers that might suit you or you can browse the profiles
• Explore your options pages on the Careers website

Most of the professional bodies for science and engineering also have useful careers resources to help you think about your next steps. These organisations often offer student membership, either free or at a discounted rate.

Biology

• Royal Society of Biology careers resources and an annual online Bioscience careers day (March)
• Biochemical Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Bioscience
• British Ecological Society career development pages
• Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) includes profiles for ecologist and environmental manager
• The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry careers information

Chemistry

• Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) - good careers overview, but need to be a member to access full careers resources (student membership is free)
• American Chemical Society (ACS) - American site with lots of useful careers information and profiles
• The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry careers information

Computer Science

• British Computer Society (BCS) includes career articles and information on career development
• Careers in Computer Science - an American site offering a good overview of computer science careers
• Women in Tech - guides, case studies, information about jobs and training

Electronic Engineering

• The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) - tools and resources for your career in engineering and technology

Environment

• Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) includes profiles of ecologists and environmental managers

Health Sciences

• Royal College of Nursing - includes a careers information section for students and newly qualified nurses, midwives and nursing support workers

• National Institute for Health Research - includes a career development section

Maths

• Workforce Skills Project - understanding the demand for physics-related skills

Psychology

• British Psychological Society - emphasis is on professional psychology careers, but some information about related areas of work
