We offer a range of appointments - online and in person - tailored to suit your requirements. If you're not sure whether you need an appointment, send us a message or come in to see us and we can help you decide.

If you have a disability or long-term health condition that makes it difficult for you to access appointments, please contact us in advance to request any reasonable adjustments that would help you. Examples of adjustments we offer - you can send the Careers Information Team a message in Handshake, or email careers@york.ac.uk

What to expect when you come for your appointment

Getting started

Careers drop-in is available 10am to 12pm Monday to Thursday in semester-time. Ask us about

You don't have to use Careers Drop-In before you book an appointment, but it can save you time in getting relevant information before a further discussion with a careers consultant.

Don't forget the Careers and Placements website has lots of information that might help answer some of your initial questions.

First steps appointment (vacation only)

This is similar to using the drop-in service (above) but is available online using Virtual on Handshake during vacation only.

Try this first:\ If you’re just getting started, you could come to a drop-in (semesters only), book an online First Steps appointment (vacation only), or find the information you need on our website.

Special circumstances

If your circumstances mean that you would benefit from a longer appointment (for example to discuss issues related to a disability), or you would like to bring a support worker with you to your appointment, please email careers@york.ac.uk providing as much information as possible, to arrange this.

Final year/graduate careers advice

Slightly longer (30 minutes) careers advice appointments tailored to the specific needs of final year students and graduates.

Use this appointment to help you:

Feel free to book a careers advice appointment (as described above), if the times available suit you better, or if you just have a quick question.

CV/application review

We can discuss your CV, LinkedIn profile or any job application you are making at the drop-in or a first steps/careers advice appointment. You can request written feedback via Handshake:

  1. Upload your CV/application to your Handshake Documents (no need to make it 'visible'; read the steps to uploading a document)
  2. Message the Careers Information Team requesting a review and tell us as much information as possible, such as:

    • your latest CareerSet score
  3. the job or course you are applying for, with a link
  4. the application deadline
  5. any particular concerns or questions you have about your CV

We give feedback within five working days. However, please note, if you request a review of more than one document at the same time, it may take longer than this to receive feedback.

Due to student demand we can't give repeat feedback on the same document and we don't proofread for grammar and spelling. You can use the tools available in MS Word or Google Docs to help with this.

Try this first:

Mock interview

If you have an interview scheduled, for a job or further study, practise answering competency-based interview questions in a safe environment, with expert feedback on your approach. A Careers Consultant will use generic interview questions, so you do not need to send us your application and job description in advance.  The focus will be on how you answer questions and perform during an interview.

Try this first:

Prepare for your interview by using the tips on the interviews page, and practise answering interview questions using Shortlist.Me.

Postgraduate Research students, please book a Postgraduate Research student careers appointment (details above) for your mock interview if possible.

Due to student demand we can't give repeat mock interviews for the same job or course interview.
