# Schools liaison activities

## [Visit Days](https://www.york.ac.uk/schools-and-colleges/york-visits-you/)

Academic staff are happy to visit schools and colleges to give presentations and talk with pupils about studying sociology. Please contact [james.cummings@york.ac.uk](mailto:james.cummings@york.ac.uk) to organise an academic visit. We also welcome group visits to our campus, which can be booked via e-mailing [outreach@york.ac.uk](mailto:outreach@york.ac.uk). We welcome pupils of years 8-13 to our campus and tailor our visit days according to the age group of our visiting students, the detail of this can be viewed [here](https://www.york.ac.uk/schools-and-colleges/explore-york/).

### Pre-16 Activities

The Department is pleased to work with local and regional schools and colleges to foster understanding of both the discipline of sociology and the experience of higher education. We are committed to widening access and providing prospective students from a wide range of social and ethnic backgrounds with the opportunity to participate and benefit from a university education. > The shine programme welcomes high-achieving year 7 to 11 students from backgrounds that are underrepresented in higher education. The five year programme includes in-school workshops, visits to campus, residential events and online resources and webinars.

> The Shine programme is looking to partner with new secondary schools in our targeted areas across Yorkshire, the Humber and across the North East. > Roots to success is a collaborative project between the University of York, York St John University, York College and Askham Bryan. This aspiration raising project for pupils at local primary and secondary schools in York is for year 6 and year 9-13 students and includes visit days and workshops about post-18 options. > ## [North Yorkshire Coast Higher Education Collaboration](https://www.york.ac.uk/schools-and-colleges/pre-16/north-yorkshire-coast-he-collaboration/)

> The NYCHEC is a partnership between the University of Hull, York St John and the University of York aiming to widen access to  through outreach to pupils in Years 7 to 11 on the North Yorkshire coast. The project welcomes students between the years of 7-11 from schools in Scarborough, Whitby, Filey and Bridlington.
