Assistance Dogs on University Premises Statement
This policy statement has been developed to clarify the position of the University regarding Assistance Dogs in non-public spaces within campus buildings, including offices and University-owned student accommodation.
This is to ensure that no member of staff, student or visitor is denied equitable access to services based on their reliance on the support of an Assistance Dog, and so that we may provide a learning, working, social and living environment which addresses the needs of our University community and is accessible, safe and welcoming.
The University understands the benefits that having other emotional support or therapy animals can bring. However, as these are not legally recognised as assistance animals they do not apply under this policy, and they will not be allowed into University premises, including University accommodation.
Guidance for the University and Assistance Dog Owners
This guidance is intended to help members of staff, students and line managers provide appropriate support for anyone who requires an assistance dog on campus. This guidance supports the University’s ‘Assistance Dogs on University Premises Policy Statement’.
This document provides general guidance and each request will be looked at on a case-by-case basis.
