What is a fellowship?

A fellowship is a funded research position, usually awarded to an individual to give them the money, time and resources to carry out independent research.

They differ from regular research grants as fellowship schemes focus on your personal career development as well as your research.

Fellowships are available from a variety of funding sources for researchers at all career stages, from early career researchers to senior academics.

They can vary in length, disciplinary remit, and the amount of funding that they provide, but whatever your background or level of experience, there is a fellowship for you.

Why should I consider a fellowship?

Fellowships are an investment in you and your career, often providing time or funding for professional development opportunities.

For early career researchers, fellowships also provide a way to achieve research independence.

Fellowships are typically prestigious, and can enhance your employability. However, this also means that they are very competitive, with success rates generally ranging from 5 to 20 per cent.

Why choose York?

The University of York provides support from the moment you decide to apply for a fellowship right through to the end of your fellowship.

You'll be a part of a research-intensive university with a commitment to a healthy, positive and diverse working environment. At York, you’ll have access to a range of support, facilities and opportunities, including the York Fellowship Programme.
