# Mature students

There's no such thing as a typical mature student at York. They come from all backgrounds, and bring skills from work, family and other life experiences.

Students aged 21 and over when they start their course are often some of our most well-equipped learners.

## Is university for me?

Whatever the reason, it's never too late to fulfil your potential, and gain the experience, knowledge and confidence to achieve your goals.

You might want to pursue a new interest, change career path, or expand your qualifications to stay ahead in your field of employment.

## Can I afford university?

Most UK students coming to university for the first time are entitled to government support for living costs, and you may get extra help if you have children. We also have other loans and bursaries available.

## Applying

As a mature undergraduate, you may be able to apply to York with:

- A levels and BTEC qualifications
- Access and Foundation courses
- apprenticeship experience
- work and voluntary experience.

You may not need the same qualifications as school-leaving applicants. You'll need to show enthusiasm and passion for your subject, and we'll consider your work or academic experience.

## Support if you need it

Our staff, colleges, societies and student buddy scheme are here to help you adjust to university life, and to meet other mature students.

We provide a network of [personal and academic support](https://www.york.ac.uk/study/student-life/support/), who can give you advice about everything from childcare to housing and money matters.

## Family life

Children are welcome in most places on campus, and we have a [nursery](https://www.york.ac.uk/nursery/), baby-changing facilities and dedicated breastfeeding spaces available.

York's Family Network organise family-friendly events, and can offer advice on having a family at university. You can [join the group on Facebook](https://www.facebook.com/groups/186333381412569/).

## Getting involved

We'll invite you to our [Step Ahead induction event](https://www.york.ac.uk/students/support/step-ahead-induction/) before term starts, as well as events during Welcome Week and throughout the year.

You could [join a society](https://www.york.ac.uk/study/student-life/societies/) to make new friends and learn a new skill, or build your network further by becoming a course rep in your department.

## Accommodation

If you'd prefer to live with other mature students, you can request it in your application. We have some family accommodation on and off campus, as well as on-campus rooms and studios for couples. We also work with York Housing Association to provide more options.
