Biography
What is place for young people and teachers in environmental decision-making? What is the role of education in responding to the climate emergency? What opportunities exist for action-oriented environmental education? These are some of the questions that I am interested in exploring through research and teaching.
I am a Senior Lecturer in Science Education and a member of the University of York Science Education Group (UYSEG). I work on science and environmental education, and my research in science education has been supported by, amongst others, the Education Endowment Foundation, the Economic and Social Research Council, the Gatsby Foundation, and the Wellcome Trust. I recently co-led the 2021 British Educational Research Association’s commission on Education for Environmental Sustainability, which has implications for policy and practice in primary, secondary and higher education.
My teaching focuses on science and environmental education, and in 2018, I was awarded a Vice Chancellor’s Award for Teaching. I welcome enquiries from interested potential PhD students, post-doctoral fellows and visiting scholars working in the research areas identified on our suggested projects page.
