# Virtual desktop service (VDS)

The virtual desktop service (VDS) provides secure access to commonly used Windows applications and University filestores.
For the best experience in terms of speed and functionality, we recommend [downloading and installing the client](#guides) on a Windows or Mac computer.
## Key features
- Connect from most devices, including managed University computers, personal Windows, Mac and Linux computers, Chromebooks, tablets and phones.
- Access [commonly used software](#additional-information), including ABBYY Finereader, ArcGIS Pro, EndNote, MATLAB, Microsoft 365, NVivo, and SPSS.
- Staff can access University business applications, including Agresso, Kinetics and SITS.
## Access instructions
- Log in with your York email address and password. [Duo two-factor authentication](https://www.york.ac.uk/it-services/tools/duo/) is required.
- For University-managed devices running Windows, you can install the Remote Desktop client from the [Software Center](https://support.york.ac.uk/s/article/Installing-software-on-managed-PCs).
- For other devices, you can [download and install the client](#guides) or [access the VDS using your web browser](https://support.york.ac.uk/s/article/Virtual-Desktop-Service-Web-Client-HTML5).
