Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
We recognise the importance of equal participation, progression and success for all. The Department of Chemistry strives to provide a working, learning, social and living environment that will enable all our staff and students to contribute fully, to flourish and to excel. Diversity within our community strengthens our research and teaching and is central to the Department’s culture. We aim to nurture excellence across every member of our community.
The Department of Chemistry at York is committed to providing a safe, diverse and respectful environment for staff and students free from all forms of discrimination, bullying and harassment. \ As a department, we will not tolerate bullying and harassment between any members of the department.
The Department is committed to the Athena Swan Charter which focuses on recognising the advancement of gender equality. In particular, we recognise the importance of the equal participation of women at all levels in a subject that has traditionally been, and remains, male-dominated.
Chemistry at York was the first academic department in the UK to receive the Athena Swan Gold award for gender equality. This is the highest level of award, recognising sustained commitment to achieving gender equality in higher education and research. The award was successfully renewed in September 2024, making it the longest held in the country.
