Using world-leading bioscience to provide sustainable supplies of food, energy and chemicals.
We use cutting-edge research to harness the power of nature for the development of new products and processes.
The Centre for Novel Agricultural Products (CNAP) aims to realise the potential of plant, microbial and algal-based renewable resources through gene discovery. From developing sustainable food crops and biofuels to advancing plants for land decontamination, we maximise the value of plants without compromising food security.

The Centre for Novel Agricultural Products is a centre of excellence where leading researchers investigate fundamental processes driving biological systems. We then apply these insights to solve some of the most pressing environmental, societal and industrial challenges of the 21st Century.
Professor Neil Bruce, CNAP Director
We have been using science to underpin industrial biotechnology for over 20 years
Winner
We were awarded The Queen's Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education
Research and innovation focus areas
CNAP is an interdisciplinary centre undertaking a range of research activities that align directly with societal needs.
Natural product biosynthesis
Low carbon fuels and chemicals
Algal metabolism and biotechnology
Crops for a sustainable planet
Partnerships
We work closely with a broad range of partners, including industry, government and charitable organisations, to deliver scientific breakthroughs and impact.
We have worked with organisations such as GlaxoSmithKline, The Department of Food and Rural Affairs and the UK Ministry of Defence.
Research and development opportunities
CNAP offers an opportunity to work alongside renowned researchers in an inspiring and multidisciplinary environment.
We are committed to training young researchers through our postgraduate research degree programmes and have hosted a number of independent research fellows developing their own research interests.

Networks
We play a leading role in BBSRC Networks in Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy (NIBB).
We currently lead two of the Phase II NIBB:
- High Value Biorenewables Network (HVB) led by CNAP's Professor Ian Graham
- Biomass Biorefinery Network (BBNet) led by CNAP's Professor Neil Bruce
We also hosted two of the Phase I NIBB.
