To address and solve some of the most pressing and complex environmental issues, our Environmental Studies graduate degree programs build on an interdisciplinary approach to the environment in which the social sciences, humanities, arts, and natural sciences meet and inform each other. Individualized programs engage in an extensive array of environmental concerns, approaches, and actions, and prepare students to become agents of change through research, education and activism in the public, private and non-profit sectors.

Environmental Studies at a Glance

Creation of the Master of Environmental Studies (MES). The program is grounded in an interdisciplinary approach combining natural sciences, social sciences, humanities and the profession of planning, and promotes a self-directed approach to redefining the boundaries and relations between natural and human environments.

Susan Chiblow (Doctoral student in Environmental Studies) talks about her research on “N’be Kendaaswin” (water knowledge). Her research highlights the vital role of water in the well-being of indigenous communities and the importance of Anishinabek and other Indigenous women and their knowledge in water governance and decision making.
