We offer language-learning options for the public, students, staff and alumni. Choose from evening classes, or learn as part of your degree through an elective module.

Languages on offer
Choose from Arabic, Chinese, Classical and Medieval Latin, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Ukrainian and Spanish. The languages available may vary each year.

We offer evening classes open to all and elective modules for York students. You'll be supported to pursue your language-learning journey in a way that best suits you.
## Evening language classes
Our classes are open to York students, staff and alumni, and to members of the public. During the course, you'll have access to the full University Library and our virtual learning platform for self-study. Classes typically run in the afternoon or evening.
York students can enjoy a discounted price. York staff, alumni, over-60s, and students from other institutions are also eligible for a smaller discount.
Our language classes are available as 22-week and 8-week courses.
### 22-week courses
- **Dates**: September to May
- **Time commitment**: two hours per week
- **Options**: you can a new language from scratch or build on your existing language skills

### 8-week courses
- **Dates**: September to December (English) February to April (other languages)
- **Time commitment**: two hours per week
- **Options**: familiarise yourself with a new language, improve your skills in a language that you already know through guided practice or learn a language for specific purposes

## Language elective modules
If you're a York student, you may be able to study a language elective module as part of your degree. We offer modules at a range of levels, from beginner through to proficient.
