Our students and researchers have access to several specialist labs to support their work. Interpreting and translation students will also study in our premium multilingual conference suite.

Department of Language and Linguistic Science

Interpreting and translation suite

This space features a high-end industry-spec Brähler DIGIMIC conference system, which is based on discrete DANTE audio channels. It's fully integrated with the necessary hardware and software to enable highly flexible in-person, hybrid and remote conferencing with simultaneous interpretation.

Students will also have access to a dedicated PC lab with specialist translation software throughout their studies. These include:

Subject labs

We have several dedicated spaces to explore different aspects of language and linguistic science.

Data lab

This houses corpora that can be used in acoustic, corpus or statistical analysis. The lab can also be used for meetings and presentations.

Forensics lab

Primarily used by forensic speech science students and researchers, this secure space enables them to work with authentic forensic case data.

Psycholinguistics lab

This lab is equipped with computers running E-Prime and Matlab to assist in audio and visual behavioural experiments.

Speech lab

This space supports the teaching and research of different aspects of speech. It includes recording and ultrasound equipment, as well as a sound-proof booth.

Specialist research facilities

We offer an impressive range of research facilities with access to thousands of historical archives and collections.

Borthwick Institute for Archives

One of the most significant international collections of archives in Britain, the Borthwick Institute offers you the opportunity to get your hands on original documents from the 12th to the 21st centuries.

Heslington Hall

Heslington Hall is a spectacular Grade II listed building at the heart of postgraduate life in the Arts and Humanities. It's a hub for interdisciplinary teaching, engagement and research, including a lively programme of events.

Campus libraries

The main University on Campus West contains a plethora of research and study materials for both languages and linguistics.

The library contains over 1,000 study spaces designed to suit a range of working styles. There are both bookable and non-bookable spaces.
