Enhance your master's with a work placement or internship
Depending on your choice of master's degree from Bath you could gain valuable real-world experience and make contacts for your career.
Some of our postgraduate courses offer a placement or internship,1 during which you'll work and apply your academic knowledge in a business or organisation directly related to your area of study.
You might also have the option to do a consultancy project (also called a Practice Track) instead of a dissertation.
Placements and internships usually last up to 12 months and can be based in the UK or in another country.2 Some placements are paid so you could earn a salary while you work.
During your placement or internship, your tuition fee pays for continued access to all University resources and support from:
- placement teams
- academic staff
- the Wellbeing Service
- the Students' Union
- the Library
On some placements, you'll pay a reduced tuition fee.
Bath's placements teams work with a range of organisations and have developed lasting relationships with the companies and charities they've placed students with in the past.
Placements and internships usually include a selection process. This could include submitting a CV and cover letter and taking part in psychometric tests, interviews, and an assessment centre. The employer will choose the best candidate for the role.
Your faculty's placement team will work alongside you to identify your personal objectives, develop your CV, and help you find a suitable placement. They will also organise practice interviews as well as placement-focused workshops within the faculty.
If you are disabled, our Careers team and Disability Service will be able to provide guidance on disclosing your disability to your employer.
A placement or internship lets you collaborate with and learn from experts while making a meaningful contribution to a company or organisation that operates in your area of study.
The chance to apply your knowledge in real-world scenarios is incredibly valuable while the transferable skills you'll develop could further enhance your employability. Placements also give you a unique opportunity to make a good impression on potential employers.
A placement that fits your career ambitions
As a student, you have a variety of placement or internship options to suit your career plans.3 Our students have previously completed placements at organisations4 including multinational corporations overseas, small to medium-sized businesses in the UK, and start-ups in the local area.2
Depending on the course you choose, you could do a research-focused placement, or work for a non-governmental organisation or charity.4
