Announcing new self-paced AI modules for UNSW’s teaching staff

Generative AI stands poised to transform university education. According to Professor Tini Mathies, Pro Vice-Chancellor Education, "AI has huge potential to personalise the learning journey for our students. AI can help us to tailor everything from administrative processes, learning activities, support and feedback to individual students’ needs."
"We need to ensure that we embrace AI to enhance educational outcomes and the student experience, while always keeping equity and ethical use front of mind. To do so, UNSW will focus on building the AI literacy and capabilities of both staff and students, providing easy access to AI technologies, and supporting our UNSW community in each step of this technological evolution," Professor Mathies continues.
In line with this strategic focus, the PVC Education Portfolio is delighted to announce the release of three new self-paced modules on Learning, Teaching, and Assessment with Generative AI at UNSW.
Designed to be completed within two hours in total, the three modules provide insights into how to harness generative AI in learning and teaching.
Empowering our educators
Through interactive exercises, case studies, and video interviews with UNSW AI practitioners, these modules cover a comprehensive range of topics, including:
- Permissible categories for AI use in assessments: Gain a deep understanding of the six categories and how they can guide students in appropriate AI usage.
- Programmatic assessment: Explore the significance of programmatic assessment in response to the shifts AI has brought to the education landscape.
- Maintaining assessment validity: Learn practical frameworks for maintaining assessment validity and testing assessment vulnerabilities.
- Critically evaluating AI outputs: Equip yourself with strategies to teach students how to use AI with full understanding of its limitations as well as its benefits.
- Streamlining teaching preparation: Discover how AI can assist in designing assessment rubrics and streamline your teaching preparation.
- Accessible teaching with AI: Explore methods for using AI to implement more accessible approaches to teaching, learning, and assessment design.
- Student perspectives on AI: Hear directly from students about their experiences, feelings, and concerns regarding AI, including real examples of how they use the technology to support their learning.
Designed and developed by PVCE’s Educational Innovation, in collaboration with the Educational Excellence team and the Nexus Program, these modules offer practical avenues for how course convenors, and those teaching and supporting our students, can integrate generative AI into their assessments and classroom teaching with confidence.
Professor Alex Steel, Director AI Strategy Education, says, "The modules provide a rich and structured suite of opportunities for enhancing student learning and developing assessment with generative AI. I am sure they will spark innovation in many areas."
Complementing the existing AI resources on the Teaching Gateway, the modules are flexible and can be completed in any order, with a total time commitment of approximately 2 hours.
