Open Access Publishing

Open Access (OA) via the publisher is one of several open access pathways available to you. Protect your rights to your Author Accepted Manuscript and you can make your work open by depositing it to UNSWorks via ROS even when the publisher version is “closed.”

Please note UNSW Library does not pay author-facing article processing charges (APCs).

UNSWorks is UNSW's institutional repository showcasing the research outputs of UNSW’s researchers and students. Research outputs deposited into UNSWorks are openly accessible, discoverable, and reusable by other researchers and the public.

UNSW Library runs regular training sessions - OA Publishing Agreements: Pathways to Open - Open Access Publishing Q&A sessions.

For queries about open access publishing agreements or rights retention, please fill in this short form.

Subscribe to Open (S2O)

UNSW Library supports various models of open access including Subscribe to Open. Articles published in the open access journals are open access with no article processing charges. This model requires the Library to continue subscribing to journals from a publisher in order to support the costs of the open access journals. A more detailed explanation of how Subscribe to Open works can be found on Subscribe to Open Community.org site.

UNSW Library participates in Subscribe to Open programs with a number of publishers including:

All current UNSW researchers including HDR candidates are eligible to publish.

If you want to suggest a particular publisher that you think the Library should investigate an agreement with, please use this form.

Open Access Publishing Agreements

Open Access publishing agreements bundle subscription costs to read and corresponding author costs to publish into one payment to the publisher. Some agreements have publishing caps, that is a limit on the number of articles that can be published open access under an agreement. Many agreements do not include all journals available for subscription from a publisher. There still may be some page and colour charges. UNSW Library only enters into such agreements that are cost neutral and which aim to minimise unintended publishing consequences from either party.

UNSW Library has entered into a number of publishing agreements that will enable UNSW affiliated authors to publish their articles openly in selected  journals including:

Intellect Publishing provides a 20% discount on author-facing APC charges for open access publishing covering their Full Journals Collection.

All current UNSW researchers including HDR candidates are eligible.

If you want to suggest a particular publisher that you think the Library should investigate an agreement with, please use this form.

No Publishing Agreements with UNSW

UNSW Library has not reached a publishing agreement with the following publishers as at February 2026. However, UNSW Library continues to subscribe to journals with these publishers. Please check the Library Collection for read access.
