# Open access

**Library support for funder requirements**\
Researchers are increasingly required to make publications openly accessible, share data and supporting materials, use persistent identifiers, and adopt FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) for research outputs. UNSW Library provides guidance and services to help researchers meet compliance requirements.

**Making your research papers open**\
UNSW Library provides support for a variety of routes to open access that meet funder requirements.

- Repository based Open access:

UNSWorks: UNSW’s institutional repository allows researchers to make the Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) of their research paper immediately open access with a CC BY licence. This route can be used when an article is being published in a subscription/closed journal. Researchers can make their work open access by uploading their the AAM to the UNSW institutional repository [UNSWorks via ROS](https://subjectguides.library.unsw.edu.au/open-access/unsworks).

- Journal based Open access:

UNSW open access publishing agreements allow UNSW researchers to publish their work openly in selected journals. For information on the University’s current open access publishing agreements consult the [Collection update guide](https://subjectguides.library.unsw.edu.au/collectionupdates/transformativeagreements).

**Rights retention**\
Many funders including the NHMRC require you to retain your [author rights](https://subjectguides.library.unsw.edu.au/open-access/author-rights). Check your grant provider's policy for the required rights retention statement. If one is not provided, use the UNSW Rights Retention Statement.

**Persistent identifiers**\
Many funders including the NHMRC, MRFF and the ARC strongly encourage the use of PIDs, such as DOIs for research papers, ORCIDs for researchers, RAiDs for research activities and RORs for research organisations. Researchers can register for an [ORCID via ROS](https://www.library.unsw.edu.au/research/managing-and-evaluating-your-research/orcid) and use it when communicating with funders and submitting manuscripts, datasets, and other research outputs. Visit the [DOI information page](https://www.library.unsw.edu.au/research/publishing-and-sharing-your-research/digital-object-identifier) for information on obtaining DOIs for your research outputs.

**Data management, data publishing and FAIR practices**\
To maximise discovery and reuse you should employ best practices in preparing and publishing your data set to make it Findable, Accessible, Reusable and Discoverable (FAIR). For information on creating a research data management plan see [Research Data Management (RDM)](https://unsw.sharepoint.com/sites/Restech/SitePages/Research-Data-Management-(RDM).aspx).

Check the [Data Publishing guide](https://subjectguides.library.unsw.edu.au/publishing/data) for information on Data publishing and FAIR practices.

**Researcher workshops and training**\
UNSW Library runs regular [workshops and training](https://unswlibrary-bookings.libcal.com/calendar/library-events?t=d&q=open%20access&cid=11273&cal=11273&inc=0&_gl=1*171hahw*_ga*MTcyMDkzNzQ0Ni4xNjk0MDUwOTEw*_ga_LGV1CPB4JE*czE3NzI1MDg1MjAkbzI2MiRnMSR0MTc3MjUwOTU3OCRqMzYkbDAkaDA.*_ga_0QVB0WWDN1*czE3NzI1MDg1MTkkbzI2MSRnMSR0MTc3MjUwOTU3OCRqMzYkbDAkaDA.) sessions on publishing research, open access, rights retention, persistent identifiers, research data management, and FAIR practices and can provide more detailed guidance and workshops on funder compliance on request.
