How you’ll get your visa
UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) have replaced physical documents, such as Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) and vignettes, with an online record of your immigration status.
After your Student visa application has been successful, you will no longer get a BRP. However, if your visa is issued overseas you may still be issued with a 90-day vignette for the purpose of travel to the UK.
You must always arrive in the UK within the dates of your Student visa. This will either be within the validity of your 90-day vignette (if you have been issued one) or after the valid from date of your Student visa if you have been issued an eVisa.
You will need to create an online UKVI account to access and share information about your immigration status. Find out more about creating a UKVI account to obtain a visa.
After you have received your visa
It is a UKVI requirement for the University to hold a copy of your passport and the visa that grants you permission to study in the UK. We will take copies of the following when you complete registration:
- your passport
- your vignette, if you were issued one
- your boarding pass or ticket showing when you arrived in the UK (unless you have applied for your visa from within the UK)
- your “share code” from the ID Check app, so we can check your immigration permission – see how to view and prove your immigration status.
If you renew your passport or visa at any other time, send a copy to studentprogressvisa@sussex.ac.uk.
Checking your visa
Make sure all the details on your eVisa are correct, including your:
- name, nationality and date of birth
- visa expiry date
- university sponsor number
- working conditions.
Most students won’t have a national insurance number. You will need to apply for one if you want to work in the UK.
If something isn’t right, find out about correcting errors on your visa.
You need to correct any errors within 10 days of receiving your visa.
