Shan came to the University of Sussex from Kolkata, India in 2000, and graduated with an MA in Media Studies in 2001. Shan relished her time at the University; she had a passion for the field of Media Studies and excelled academically, as well as forging long-lasting friendships with fellow students and meeting her future husband. Tragically, Shan's life was cut short in 2022 due to illness.
Shan’s brother Sunil Vaswani and husband Lincoln Borgartz have set up the scholarship in her name to give other international students the opportunity to study Media at postgraduate level at the University of Sussex.
