We’re investing in making our campus better – during this time we’re trying hard to minimise disruption. Keep up to date with current works, so you can plan ahead if you are coming to campus.

Creating a better campus

We are making our campus more accessible, more sustainable and better connected. From big builds to small refurbishments, we have some exciting changes underway.

Sometimes, you may notice things like diversions and construction work taking place across campus. We're trying hard to minimise disruption and making sure you can still attend classes and spend time on campus as part of your student experience. You can keep up to date on our current works and see the latest news about our projects.

West Slope – ongoing works

We are currently developing the West Slope area of campus. This follows our redevelopment of East Slope, which added thousands of new student bedrooms and the Student Centre.

West Slope is set to transform the heart of our campus, adding 1,899 new student bedrooms alongside new wellbeing, study and social spaces. Over the next academic year, construction of our new Health and Wellbeing Centre and new student accommodation will be underway.

If you live on campus, you can find out more about the expected impact of works on residences or download our accommodation handbook [PDF].

Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) – ongoing works

RAAC is a material that was commonly used in the construction industry between the 1960s and 1980s. It has a lifespan of around 30 years, but can still be found in some UK buildings, particularly in public buildings built in that era.

The University of Sussex has RAAC panels in seven of its buildings:

These are:

Safety measures are in place and are regularly checked to ensure they remain effective – all our buildings remain open and safe to use.

Our programme to manage RAAC is already underway, with each affected building having RAAC replaced or reinforced. Find out more about how we are managing RAAC panels at Sussex.

This work is taking place alongside other exciting improvement works. Find out about refurbishments to our eateries.
