Our expert faculty are specialists in childhood and youth studies. Sussex is home to the Centre for Innovation and Research in Childhood and Youth (CIRCY), a centre of research excellence focused on understanding the experiences of young people in today’s digital, data-driven world. Their research is making a local, national and global impact. You’ll learn from this cutting-edge research.

Our interdisciplinary approach blends education, sociology, anthropology and development studies. You’ll cover diverse themes, such as:

You’ll learn through theoretical discussions, conducting independent research, and analysing real-world issues. A beneficial teacher-to-student ratio ensures you’ll be well supported. This includes tailored feedback, guidance and in-person tutorials fostering deeper understanding. You’ll also undertake a dissertation in the specific area that interests you.

You’ll graduate with the skills to succeed in many careers. This includes education, social work, youth advocacy, child protection or policymaking, among others.

While it’s our aim for students to take their preferred combinations of options, this can’t be guaranteed and will be subject to timetabling. Options may be grouped and if so, students will be able to choose a set number of options from the selection available in any particular group.

Work placement

We have strong links with a number of local and national organisations. This helps with securing volunteer work and/or work experience as part of the course. Many of our graduates find employment in non-profit organisations, schools and social research settings.

Text: The Spirit of Sussex Award is an exciting new programme designed to recognise and celebrate the things you do outside your course.

Participating in the Award makes it easy and fun for you to get involved and make the most of university life.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.

We’ll do our best to provide as much optional choice as we can, but timetabling constraints mean it may not be possible to take some module combinations. The structure of a small number of courses means that the order of modules or the streams you choose may determine whether modules are core or optional. This means that your core modules or options may differ from what’s shown here.

Placements

This course has an optional placement in the spring term, as well as a number of local day trips. Students must pay for their own travel costs.

DBS check

Students who plan to take the optional module "Practice Experience with Children and Youth" will need to satisfactorily complete an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check prior to attending the placement. The University subsidises the DBS check, with no cost to the student.

Criminal record certificate

International students will be required to obtain a recent criminal record certificate from their home country. A list of admissible certificates can be found on the UK Government website: Criminal records checks for overseas applicants
