2023-2024 Admissions cycle
The Department of Astronomy evaluates applicants holistically and will take the significant disruptions of COVID-19 into account when reviewing students’ transcripts and other admissions materials. In particular, we will respect decisions regarding the adoption of Credit/Fail and other grading options for the Spring 2020 semester.
In addition, due in part to the continuing difficulties and challenges in taking the GRE test this year, the Department has decided that the General and Physics GRE test will not be considered in the evaluation of graduate applications in the 2023-2024 admissions cycle.

How to Apply
- All applicants should submit their application through the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences application system by December 15, 2023.
- Applicants may be invited for a phone interview

General requirements
Applicants are expected to have a strong undergraduate preparation in physics and mathematics. Although some formal training in astronomy is useful, it is by no means a prerequisite for admission.
- A Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) prior to matriculation at Yale.
- A statement of purpose.
- Unofficial transcripts for each prior college or university attended.
- Three letters of recommendation.
- Application fee (please refer to Fees section).
- General GRE - NOT ACCEPTED
- Physics GRE - NOT ACCEPTED
